The Library Staff wishes everyone a safe and Happy New Year! Here at the library we hope to make 2012 a wonderful year filled with some of our favorite programs along with some new, creative ones.

In reflection, the past year had quite a few memorable moments. The Art Show, introducing local talent for the first time, was wonderful! (We will be repeating that this coming March, along with Poetry Night). Our Murder Mystery Dinner proved to be highly entertaining as was the Night at the Noble Winery. Over 60 children participated in our Summer Reading Program earning prizes as they completed selected tasks. For the younger group, Story Time was available filled with tales retold, puzzles and coloring. Our annual Yard Sale, Book Sale, Chicken Barbeque and Silent Auction were well attended. We even held an after school program four days a week during the first half of the year. The Friends of the Library, through fundraisers completely renovated our back room turning it into a room for meetings, get togethers and just a cozy place to come for coffee. The library was painted inside and out plus fresh landscaping gave us a new look. Our newest addition, the History of Ripley has become a monthly program taking everyone for a trip down memory lane. Lastly, let's not forget our computer and painting classes plus our knitting club, book club and card club.

All of this could not have been accomplished without your help. Many thanks to the Library Board, Friends of the Library, Volunteers, Instructors, faithful patrons, donators including local businesses and anyone who gave their time and effort to keep this library a focal point of the community.

Christmas Time

The drawing for the Holiday Lottery Wreath will be Thursday night, Dec 22nd at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold until the time of the drawing. They are selling at $2.00 per ticket or 3/$5.00.

Open House!

Book Review - The Name of the Wind

For all of my fantasy readers out there, have I got a book for you! It is called The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Now I just have to tell you, this is one of my all time ablsolutely, positively favorite fantasy books that I have every read! It is the first in a trilogy with the last book not completed yet. We have both the first and second books here at the library. It had me from the first couple of pages and I never turned back. You will find it in the adult section.

Here it is the middle of November and I haven't posted anything. So much has been happening here. Let me fill you in... The Friends of the Library had a grand opening of the back room. They have completed renovated the back room and it looks great! It's the perfect place for group meetings or a great spot to grab a cup of coffee, read the paper and just relax. Stop by and check it out.

Our annual Silent Auction was held last Saturday. There was so much to choose from! We had a great time. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand in any fashion.

The Ripley Library will be closed all of next week from Nov 20-27. We will be painting the interior walls. If you're handy with a brush or a roller or are willing to pack up some bookshelves, call the library and we will set up days and times with you.

From all of us here at the library we wish all of you a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving and let us not forget all the things we have to be thankful for.

Look What's Happening in October!

One stroke painting classes with instructor Ada Filutze begins October 1. You must register first as seating is limited.

Baker's Club will hold its first meeting Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. Advance yur culinary skills as you meet with old friends and make new acquaintances. This group will meet once a month where they will bring a dish to pass and exchange tips and recipes.

Our newest Murder Mystery, "Lethal Luau" is coming Oct. 15 -

6 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Ripley. The night includes a full course meal along with a taste of murder and mystery. Tickets are now on sale at the library.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: the History of Ripley Part II returns with Art Kinney on October 18

at 2 p.m. Bring your old photos and join us for an interesting conversation about the past.

The Friends of the Library will present the grand Opening of the "Community Room" with guest speakers and refreshments on October 27th at 6 p.m. Wait until you see what they've done!

So much is going on...you won't want to miss any of it!

Night at the Winery Follow-up

That's right. The Summer Reading Program is back. This year our theme is One World, Many Stories. We welcome all students who are entering Grades Preschool to Grade 8. Join us as we explore the differences in our country to those of other countries around the world.

Book Review

I just read a book recently that goes in my top ten list of all-time favorite junior books! It is called "The Black Book of Secrets" by F.E. Higgins. This book tells the story of a boy who escapes to a remote village only to be taken in by the new pawnbroker who trades people's secrets for cash. It is a fast moving story with surprises around every corner. This book kept me guessing until the very end! If you haven't read it yet, give it a try. I love suspense and this was loaded with it. T

May's Events!

Living Smart - a 6 week program beginning May 5th.. This is aimed at parents with school age children who want to improve their lives through nutrition and budgeting tips and educating them on how to eat smart and healthy.

Murder Mystery Dinner - "Murder @ Maple Mount Ski Resort" coming up Saturday, May 7th has been SOLD OUT. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket and for those who didn't make it in time, hope to see you at our next mystery dinner!

YARD SALE - Coming May 20-21. We are looking for donated items in good condition. We will gladly accept furniture, clothes, toys, glassware, electronic gadgets...just about anything as long as its in good condition. Donations may be dropped off at the library any time during our open hours of operation.

Living Healthy- coming May 20th from 1:30-4. This class will meet for six weeks presenting a program for people with chronic ailments such as fatigue, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, etc. It will show you where to get the support you need, ways to deal with the pain and fatigue, and understand new treatment choices along with choosing better exercise and nutrition options.

The Ripley Free Library is bursting at the seams this month!

Tickets for a new Murder Mystery Dinner, "Murder at the Maplemount Ski Resort", are on sale now at $15.00 per person, at the library. That price includes a full course meal and an evening of entertainment. The mystery will take place on May 7th at the First Baptist Church in Ripley. This event has always sold out so get your tickets now!

Local Author Elizabeth Way will be here on April 16 from noon -2 p.m., for her program, The Wayward Tales, followed by a book signing of her new book, "And I Will Love You From Heaven". You won't want to miss this!

Robert Peterson, a WWII Prisoner of War, will be here on April 30th at Noon to speak of his experiences as a POW. Learn firsthand what it was like to live in such a troubling time. A question and answer period will follow.

Art Exhibit Coming Soon!

Next Tuesday, March 15, we will launch our Art Exhibit. We will display not only copies of American classics, but this year we are adding items from local artists and photographers. They will be on display until the end of March. Be sure to stop by and take a look. If there is anyone interested in submitting their works, please have them at the library by this Saturday, March 12.

Poetry Night was a great success last night! Many thanks to everyone who attended and special thanks to those who recited both original and well known works.

Feb. 8th at 7 p.m. when we will present Poetry Night. We invite everyone to recite their original works or read from one of their favorite poets. Please drop off a copy of your entry at the circulation desk.
Make the time to come to this event, even if you don't wish to recite. It's amazing how much talent there is in the area. Refreshments will be served following the performance.

Magyk by Angie Sage ****

I just read another great story. Well maybe not "great", but very good nonetheless. The junior book titled Magyk by Angie Sage is the first in a series about a character named Septimus Heap. There is a lot of action, amusing moments, good vs evil but most of all the story deals with Magyk. I won't spoil it for anyone but wait until you see what they found in the tunnel below Aunt Zelda's kitchen! I enjoyed the story so much that I will probably start the second book this weekend. If you like fantasy or even if you don't, give this one a try!

Thackeray's Book Review

It's been awhile since I've posted a book review but this is the start of a new year and I think I'm up for the challenge. Today I am reviewing an easy book titled Pigs Make Me Sneeze! by Mo Willems. I really liked this book a lot. Elephant can't stop sneezing whenever he's around his friend Piggie. What should he do? Is he allergic to his best friend? I hope my young readers check this one out. It was very good.

Shhhhhhh! The Ripley Free Library is gearing up for our Annual Silent Auction on Saturday, Nov. 13th. We have to tone it down just a bit while we're in the library but after that, TELL EVERYONE!!!! There are tons of items. We have toys, a Car Jack, Seat Covers for Cars, Salsa Mix, , Homes for our Fine Feathered Friends, Gift Certificates of all kinds including fine dining, massage, bowling, Curves membership for one month and jewelry. Plus hand made items, a sleeping bag, stuffed bear, home medic massager, growing scarecrow, baskets galore and so much more. Our Annual Chicken Barbeque will be on Sunday, August 29th at the firemen's field, marking an end to our book sale. Tickets are only $8.00 and on sale now at the library. Pizza Party!

The Summer Reading Program will be drawing to a close on Tuesday, Aug. 3rd. In celebration of all the hard work that the children performed, we will end with a pizza party. Seventy-four young people signed up this year, Depending on the age group, children were required to play educational computer games, write stories, give book reviews, make crafts, create sea serpents, find word definitions, color pictures, put puzzles together, work in the almanac, write a paragraph describing a magazine article, a newspaper article and above all else...READ, no matter how old they were. My thanks for your participation and congratulations to those who participated. Great Job Everyone!

Community Salad Night

Ripley Free Library begins its annual book drive on Monday,

July 12th. We are looking for slightly used books in good condition. The library will gladly accept any adult or children's fiction or non- fiction books. We cannot accept text books, Reader's Digest condensed books or encyclopedia sets. Please drop off your donations during our open hours of operation.

The book sale will begin on August 7th. For you historical buffs, we have many books that have been weeded from our collection. Let's make this the biggest sale event ever. You won't want to miss it!

The Ripley Library has been buzzing for the past few weeks. Not only have we staged our annual Murdery Mystery and completed our huge Yard Sale, but we have also started our second beginner Computer Classes and are in the middle of our One Stroke Art Classes. Demand is great for our beginner computer classes so we will "bee" starting another set in June. Plus Troy Smith from the VA will be here to speak to veterans about programs and benefits that they may be eligible for. All this and more as we plan for the Summer Reading Program coming the end of June. Stay tuned for more detailed updates on these events. That's right, the Ripley Free Library is having its Annual Yard Sale, Friday and Saturday, May 14-15. We are asking for donated items of all sorts in GOOD condition. Yes, we will take clothes, toys, furniture, knick knacks, bikes in good working condition, etc. Check your closets, attics, garages...who knows what treasures you may find! Please drop off your items only during our open hours of business. Proceeds from the yard sale will go towards the Summer Reading Program.

February has been a busy month, but I did manage to read Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. I'm glad I found the time to do it. This story is about a boy who moves into a new neighborhood only to discover that he is the focus of the school bully. He befriends a boy who lives in the woods. This story has just about everything in it...alligators, snakes, owls, good guys, bad guys and some funny parts too. It was a very good read and I learned some things too! Check it out.

Growing Older

On Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m., Dr. Mary Anne Spanos from the Office of the Aging will give a talk on classes available in the area, insurance coverage and discount dining areas. Poetry Night

This year the Ripley Free Library is trying something new! We are looking for original poets in our community to recite their own works in front of a captive audience. Everyone is welcome.

You must register at the library ahead of time, as participation is limited. At the time of registration a copy of your poem is requested.

The Big Read

This year we will be reading My Antonia by Willa Cather. The group will meet every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. There will be assignments handed out each week along with reading lessons that will be discussed at the following meeting. Come and join us for a great time. You might just learn a little something along the way!

The stories start when she is a little girl all the way up to her adulthood. Sure you have heard of her, along with the television series, but have you read the books for yourself? Give them a try, you won't be sorry.

Easy Author of the Month is Stan and Jan Berenstain. Check out all the fun the Berenstain Bears have, go to the dentist with Brother Bear, or see who is in the In Crowd with Sister Bear, or just stay at the Tree House with Mama Bear. Any story you pick will be a great one.

The book I am going to review this month is Twilight. I have been hearing all the hype about this book, the movies etc., I decided that I just had to read it for myself. Boy am I glad I did. It pulled me in on the first few pages and kept its grip through the whole book, I couldn't put it down. Its a love story. Yes I know not another love story, but this is different. Its a love story involving Edward, a vampire and Bella, a human. Bella starts a new school in the middle of the year. Edward is a loner, not one to make friends. He is drawn to her, can't stay away from her... why you ask? Well for the answer you will just have to read it yourself. We have a copy here in the library, in the junior section, but adults would like it too.

Authors of the Month

Adult Author of the Month is James Patterson. If you like suspense novels, why not give this author a try. There are many different titles to choose from. Read about his character Alex Cross, or maybe The Womens Murder Club Series.

Junior Author is Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. With over 135 titles to choose from, there shouldn't be a problem finding one that interests you. How about reading about the Boy-Girl Battle Books, or maybe a Ghost Story.

Easy Author is A.A. Milne. He wrote the Winnie the Pooh books that everyone loves. But did you know he also wrote other stories? Come in and check out the few we have that aren't about a bear thats filled with fluff and stuff. Also check out the bulletin board for some good Pooh quotes.

GAME NIGHTS ARE BACK!

Grab your coat and hat and head over to the library. A large assortment of games are available for people of all ages. Come alone, bring a friend or invite the whole family. We will provide players if you come in alone. This is a great chance to meet with old friends or make some new ones. This is not just for children. We ask that children be at least 8 years of age, unless accompanied by an adult.

If enough interest is shown, tournament playoffs will be scheduled.

Our wish is that everyone make the most of 2010, giving and caring that little bit more than we did last year. At this time of year we often make New Year's Resolutions in hopes that we can change or improve on things in our lives. Some wish to quit smoking, others to lose weight. Many of us strive to be a little bit better than we have been in previous years.

We are asking that people share their resolutions with all of us. Who knows? It might just inspire us to try something new. Just what is it that you would like to do differently in 2010? Your name isn't necessary...just your initials, or you may even remain anonymous. You may post your suggestions here or email Thackeray or even stop by the library and fill out a sheet there. We welcome responses from people of all ages. Check back in from time to time and see what other people would like to change.

Here's just a few things that Thackeray and I would like to improve on:
Read more books.
Get organized.
Be a little nicer.
Cut back on snacks.
Pray more.
Be patient.

Hi Everyone!

This month I am reviewing the book, A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck. Now I have to tell you, this is one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. It's not a new book but everyone can relate to everything that happens to Mary Alice while she spends a year with her Grandma Dowdel.

They live in a small town very much like ours. Grandma Dowdel is both feared and admired by most, but she will stand up to anyone who causes trouble. One night she sent Mildred's horse and boots on their way home without a rider, while Mildred was demanding that Mary Alice pay her a dollar. It still makes me laugh when I think about it. Mildred had a very long walk home that night!

Grandma is one very tough lady who will have you laughing out loud. And just in case you were curious, there is a cat named Bootsie in the story too. I don't always read stories that have animals in them but I like to give credit to my furry friends when they get mentioned in a story.

This is a wonderful read for both junior readers and adults. (As a matter of fact, the women's book club read this one time and they all enjoyed it too!)

Random Question

When you spilled the milk, did it look like the moon?
I would never let spilled milk stand long enough to see if it resembled the moon or not. I do so love milk!

Christmas Open House

Thackeray's Review - The Magician's Elephant

The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo was a wonderful story. It was full of mystery and intrigue. It teaches you to believe in the unbelievable. Things get a little wild when an elephant crashes through the ceiling and lands on a lady's lap and that is only the beginning of the story!

(I must admit the thought of an elephant wandering around made me a little nervous, but she's really very nice). This is a must read for junior as well as adult readers.

Random Question:
What's the earliest you've gotten up to watch cartoons and what did you see?
The librarian doesn't turn the TV on very often and I haven't mastered how to use the remote yet. I'm working on it!
